Antique Omani Large Wide Hole Silver Beads from a Digg Bedouin Necklace M00573
This listing is for antique Omani beads that come from a Digg necklace worn by Bedouin women in Central Oman. An example of such a necklace showing similar beads can be found at the British Museum 2009,6023.212, image 1019570001
The large silver beads have a large thread-hole wide enough to accommodate the thick cotton rope on which the rest of the necklace is strung. The beads similar to this listing flank the small Hirz amulets shown in the British Museum Digg necklace illustration of item 2009,6023.212.
The beads weigh approximately 8-12g, about 10 g on average; they measure 27-3mm in diameter and are about 27-30mm long. The stringing hole is about 20mm. The beads are decorated around the rim of the stringing hole, with decorations of similar style but varying from bead to bead in detail.
These are old beads that were taken from the necklace in which the cotton stringing deteriorated from age and was no longer usable. The beads show age-appropriate dents and imperfections, some more than others. The silver is thin, and the dents are likely restorable with minor skill, however, we left them as they were. The price factors in the imperfections already.
